Recognizing that cryptocurrency, like bitcoin, was only the first application of blockchain technology, there are now over 55 different industries exploring blockchain. Indeed, the use cases for a transparent, verifiable register of transaction data seem practically endless. In response to the demand by enterprise and industry professionals, on August 8th, BlockSpaces co-hosted an event with entrepreneurial ecosystem leaders, High Tech Connect, and Masterminds Tampa.

The topic of the evening, “The Past, Present and Future of Blockchain & Crypto”, drew a large crowd of business leaders who were intrigued by the potential of blockchain and token based systems to fundamentally change how we manage and transmit value across the internet.

Nasdaq, who covered the event, described the it as a way to tell the story of blockchain from the perspective of technologists and data scientists to help address “major challenges and needs that will drive the future, and will affect our businesses and lives.” Check out this video recap of the event!

The timing of the event comes on the heels of a recent Deloitte survey that found, nearly 40% of global executives cited lack of knowledge of implementation as their greatest organizational barrier to investment in blockchain and nearly 30% responded that their greatest barrier was lack of in-house skills and understanding of how to use blockchain.

The BlockSpaces team is responding to this need by providing a wealth of opportunities in September and October to discover more about blockchain for business. Make sure and check out these industry focused events along with all of our regularly scheduled classes and meetups found on our Events page.

On September 10th, BlockSpaces joins MicroSoft HaloLens, and 3D printing provider, MLC CAD, for a Bay Area Manufacturers Association (BAMA) Member Roundtable discussion. This session will give a brief overview of the history and technical aspects of blockchain, and how leaders in the manufacturing industry are proposing using it to streamline inefficiencies and stay ahead of their competition. For those who can not make this event, but are interested in blockchain for manufacturing, BlockSpaces and BAMA will be holding a Blockchain and Manufacturing networking event on October 17th. Details and tickets available here.

On September 19th, we tackle quantum computing with Roger Grimes, renowned cybersecurity expert and data-driven defense evangelist for Tampa Bay $1B unicorn company, KnowBe4, who will be presenting “Quantum Day of Reckoning and How It Impacts Blockchain”.

Grimes, the author of 11 books and over 1000 national magazine articles on computer security, will present his perspectives on how quantum computing is getting ready to break all traditional public key crypto, like RSA and Diffie-Hellman, and every secret it protects. This means that digital certificates, PKI, TLS, VPNs, Wi-Fi networks, and even most crypto-currencies are left unprotected in an instant. When will it happen? Many experts think it’s sooner than you think. Attend to learn what you can do to start preparing for it today.

As an IBM Registered Business Partner, we are delighted to welcome back IBM’s Enterprise Blockchain Guru, Chris Tyler, on September 26th to give a workshop on How to Build a Cognitive IoT App in just 7 steps”.
BlockSpaces members are lucky to have Chris as a familiar face to our space, and his monthly sessions always provide maximum value. During this workshop, attendees will build a cognitive IoT solution in seven simple steps using the IBM Cloud, the IBM Watson IoT platform, and IBM Watson Studio (formerly IBM Data Science Experience)

On October 2nd, our very own, Tracie Myers, will lead her very popular series, “Token Talk with Tracie” in a discussion of JPMCoin, the token deployed by J.P. Morgan Chase in February 2019.

This session will also include an “Introduction to Quorum” segment. Quorum is an open sourced, permissioned version of Ethereum built for enterprise. It is ideal for any application requiring high speed and high throughput processing of private transactions within a permissioned group of known participants. Details and tickets here.

Start Up Spotlight

Our monthly tip o’ the hat to the Superstar Startups in our community.

Pocket Network, one of the first projects to mature from Blockspaces into it’s own fully operational startup, has been making major headway. For starters, Pocket Network has secured partnerships with major players in the blockchain space such as MyEtherWallet, Nifty Wallet by POA Network, and DAppNode, as well as blockchain foundations Aion and Tezos. The Pocket team is now ramping up for the delivery of its Mainnet platform, a fully decentralized API layer for blockchain infrastructure, in early 2020.
